Weekly Soundtrack: Washed Out

By Anna Piszczkiewicz

YouNxt reader and sometimes contributor, Cailinput Washed Out on our radar. She sold us with these words: “My favourite band of the moment.” And now, it’s ours too.

Washed Out is one-man band Ernest Greene. The Georgia-born producer’s first full-length album Within and Without follows a pair of critically acclaimed EPs (Life of Leisure and High Times) released in 2009.

With this latest effort, Greene traded his lo-fi melodies, recorded in his parent’s house, for a cleaned-up studio sound.

Peaceful yet punchy, imaginative yet comfortable, Washed Out’s dreamy soundscapes are the perfect mid-afternoon pick-me-up. “Life is moving as it should with all its ebbs and flows,” the music seems to say.

The video for “Amor Fati” pairs Greene’s subtle synth-pop with shots of backpacking through Iceland and speaks to our wanderlust. It’s a beauty.

“Eyes Be Closed” opens the nine-song collection of washed-out sounds.
