Canadian electro indie duo Purity Ring played a 1 a.m. set on a Thursday night during NXNE. The venue, Wrongbar, was filled from front to back. Not bad for a band that got music blogs buzzing just last year with the release of online singles Ungirthed, Lofticries and Belispeak.
Purity Ring – “Belispeak”
Purity Ring are Megan James and Corin Roddick. Originally from Edmonton, Megan now lives in Halifax and Corin in Montreal. They work independently of each other, fine tuning compositions via email and phone. It’s all very 21st century.
Corin is the drum master, Megan the wordsmith and pianist, although she has to step away from the comfort of a musical instrument for their live shows.
The pair put on a theatrical set: Megan saunters around the stage, lights barely casting a shadow on her face, while Corin stands perched behind his synth and DIY touch-activated lanterns. As mystical as the music itself.
What we like: moody beats, heavy bass lines, catchy vocals.
Purity Ring will release their debut album “Shrines” on July 24 (US and Canada).
