Weekly SNDtrack: Macklemore

Oddly enough, I discovered Seattle rap sensation Macklemore in Europe where he is all the rage among cool 13-year-old girls. It pays off having a hip cousin that’s in the know. That’s her here…

There’s no shame in that though. Teenagers have a knack for sniffing out genuine talent and Macklemore is indisputably one talented act.

Working along side producer and collaborator Ryan Lewis, Macklemore delivers a sound that’s both invigorating and fresh in its authenticity. Most importantly, he’s miles away from the tired rap clichés (guns, bling and bitches) that have plagued the genre for years.

Macklemore sounds fresh and looks cool; the man loves his Value Village wardrobe. And I love him nearly as much as those teenage girls. Seriously though, his debut studio album The Heist (2012) is one of the best I’ve heard in years.

Here’s the video for “Thrift Song”. You might have already heard it – 334 million people have watched this video. But it’s a good time to revisit it since the song appears in the trailer for the newly released Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson comedy The Internship. Enjoy.

Macklemore and his posse are currently on a world tour. If you’re thinking about catching the show, here’s what you can expect…
