I know what you’re thinking: You’re suggesting Europop, really? You can’t be serious. Well, I am.
“Endless Summer” by Oceana is the official anthem for the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament hosted in Poland and Ukraine. The track has all the essentials meant to get football fans moving:
1. A chorus line you can sing along to, no matter your mother tongue.
2. A mix of the most popular dance hits from past years (Anyone else here similarities to Alexandra Stan’s “Mr. Saxobeat” and Mr. President’s “Coco Jambo”? And are you as embarrassed as I am to know these references?)
3. Shots of football stadiums, stars, games and supporters.
Also, the video features my motherland, Poland, and seeing its landmarks, new and old, in high-def glory is heartwarming.
“Endless Summer” – currently on top 10 radio charts in the home country – reminds me of summertime drives through the Polish countryside, sun hitting your face, europop blaring through the speakers. You get the picture, even if it’s not your cup of tea. On listen number five you’ll start to think that hey, “whoa-o-o-o, yeah-eah-eah-eah” is quite catchy.
Here’s to summer and the 2012 European football championships, which kicks off June 8th in Warsaw.
