Drive was by far my favourite film of 2011. Directed by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn and starring Canadian Ryan Gosling, it delivered a mix of ultra cool (if somewhat violent) visuals mixed with an unbelievably awesome soundtrack, great performances and nail bitting story. I first saw the film in New York where it received a standing ovation at a regular (non-film festival) screening. When was the last time you saw something like that happen?
Two years later we are once again treated to a cinematic Refn-Gosling treat. This time the filmmaking duo has brought us Only God Forgives – an ultra violent revenge saga set in Bangkok.
The film made its debut in Cannes where it was apparently booed by journalists. But what do they know about films anyway?
On Rotten Tomatoes its received a 93% “I wanna see this” rating from movie goers. And that’s really the vote that counts, doesn’t it? After all, those are the folks who actually pay for their movie tickets.
Only God Forgives comes out in theatres and On Demand on July 19th.
