With the 85th Academy Awards less than a week away, we’re getting into a filmic state of mind (check out our behind the scenes photos from last year’s Oscar night). Each day up until the Oscar gala on February 24th we’ll feature a film that caught our attention.
Beasts is nominated for a Best Picture Oscar (it already won the Caméra d’Or at Cannes and the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance) as well as Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay (Lucy Alibar, Benh Zeitlin) and Best Actress (Quvenzhané Wallis). At the age of 9, Wallis is the youngest ever nominee of the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Not bad for a first feature film, right?
The film tells the story of a young girl named Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) and her father who are part of a community that lives outside of the structure of modern society in an isolated Louisiana swampland known as the Bathtub. When rising flood waters threaten the area, the young girl’s resourcefulness and lively imagination are called into play as the region’s residents face the approaching disaster.
The film is inspiring and so is the story of the artists that made it.
